The Kalamazoo Reptiles & Exotic Animal Show takes place Saturday, March 23 from 10am to 3pm at the Kalamazoo County Expo Center located at 2900 Lake Street in Room A. It’s the place to be for exotic animal & reptile enthusiast to buy, sell or trade reptiles, small mammals & other exotic pets. Families are welcome to drop in to the Interpretive Center at the Kalamazoo Nature Center located at 7000 N. Westnedge Avenue in Kalamazoo, Michigan on Saturday, December 22 between 10am and 4pm for a fun hands-on experience to be a detective & learn the identity of winter animals with the signs they left behind.

Admission Rates: KNC Members – FREE, Children (3 & under) – FREE, Children (4-17) - $4.00, Senior’s (55+) - $6.00, Adults - $7.00.

If you are looking for an opportunity to volunteer along with getting some exercise and fresh air, the Department of Natural Resources would be happy to have your help during the month of December. They are looking for people to participate in their stewardship workday at different locations.

You do not need any experience because they will have people to show you the ropes for using any equipment, if needed.

DNR is holding meetings on fishing regulation proposals

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Southern Lake Michigan Management Unit in Fisheries Division has announced meetings in the Lansing, Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids areas to discuss local and statewide fishing regulation proposals.

The meetings will be held on the following dates in the following locations:

  • Monday, March 26 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Delta Township Library (5130 Davenport, Lansing)
  • Tuesday, March 27 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Portage Library (300 Library Lane, Portage)
  • Monday, April 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Plainfield Charter Township Office (6161 Belmont Ave, NE, Belmont)

Several local regulation proposals will be discussed at the meetings, including the following:

  • Removing Bluejay Creek (Berrien County) and Spring Creek (St. Joseph County) from the Designated Trout Streams list.

Bluebird Monitor Training

Today is the last day to register for this workshop taking place on March 31 from 1pm – 3pm at the Kalamazoo Nature Center at 700 N. Westnedge Ave. in Kalamazoo!

This is an opportunity to help KNC monitor a group of nest-box, house wrens, bluebirds and tree swallows & learn to identify the bird species by the nest or eggs, how to approach the box, and estimate the nestlings, age. A kit of resources and support will be given to each volunteer.  Trails are available at Fort Custer Recreation Area, KNC and local golf courses.

Training:  classroom session on March 29 from 6 to 8pm AND a hands-on hike takes place on Saturday, March 31 from 10am to noon. Cost: Members, $15, Non-members, $20; previous monitors take $10 off!
