The Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra is happy to announce the winners of the “Make Me a Melody” classroom competition contest for Youth Concerts 2013.

The youth concerts will explore the musical structure of well known melodies and how they are created, along with how such melodies can influence different moods and emotions. This will allow students to become more engaged with the individual pieces of music by listening, singing and moving along with the pitches, as well as have some of their very own melodies performed by the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra.

New era begins at WMU: Fleck introduced as newest Bronco football coach

New era begins at WMU: Fleck introduced as newest Bronco football coach

Written by Bill Broderick

There’s an expression around the Western Michigan University campus that goes, It’s a great day to be a Bronco.

Well, on Tuesday, it was a pretty good day to be P.J. Fleck also.

Fleck was introduced as the 15th head coach of the Western Michigan University football team, after his trip to Kalamazoo was delayed slightly because his wife was having a baby Monday night.

With his wife and new baby at home in Florida, Fleck made it to Kalamazoo on Tuesday and met the media with an enthusiasm that made it pretty obvious he was having a good couple of days.

“It’s great to be back in the MAC,” Fleck excitedly said from his podium at the Seelye Center on the campus of WMU Tuesday afternoon. “I am truly honored and humbled to be the 15th head coach of the Western Michigan University football program. My staff and I will make it our mission to bring excitement, energy and a winning tradition back to the Broncos.”

KPS - An Open Letter to Our Parents

Dear Parent/Guardian:

The safety and security of our students and staff are very important to us.

Given Friday’s tragedy in Connecticut, I wanted to share Kalamazoo Public Schools security-related measures of the last few years.  First, we have equipped all elementary and middle schools with buzzer-camera-intercom systems at their front doors.

Second, we have installed hundreds of cameras in our middle schools and high schools and trained and retrained security staff in those schools.

Third, we have strengthened our relationships with local law enforcement agencies, with which we work closely, given the challenges in the broader community.
