Missing Kalamazoo woman murdered in Nepal

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- A missing Kalamazoo woman has been murdered in Nepal.

25-year-old Dahlia Yehia had been visiting Nepal since July 20 helping those affected by an earthquake in April.

According to the Himilayan Times, Yehia was renting a room from a teacher named Narayan Paudel.

Apparently, Paudel invited her via the internet to stay with him as part of an earthquake relief support program.

Paudel confessed to beating Yehia to death with a hammer and throwing her body into the Seti River on August 7.

Police have yet to determine a motive for the killing.

Yehia's family set up a Facebook page, called Find Dahlia after they lost contact with her on August 6th.

Missing elderly man with dementia found safe in Indiana

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- An elderly man with dementia who was reported missing after walking away from his group home in Kalamazoo has been found safe in Indiana.

Darl Lee Mapes had last been seen Monday, leaving the home in the 200 block of Allen Blvd. Police announced he was missing Wednesday afternoon. Wednesday evening, they announced he had been found safe and plans were being made for bringing him home.

Lawton man killed after crashing car into tree

LAWTON, Mich. (WZZM) -- A 28-year-old man is dead after crashing his car into a tree in Van Buren County Saturday morning.

Deputies responded to a call of a single motor vehicle crash on the north side of 32nd Street at County Road 669 just before 8 a.m.

Initial investigation reveals Andrew Cusentino, of Lawton, was traveling north on 32nd Street when he went through the marked stop sign at County Road 669.

Cusentino's 2005 Hyundai Sonata went off the roadway and struck a tree. The 28-year-old was pronounced dead on scene. He was the only person in the car.

Deputies think the crash happened sometime in the early morning hours. The crash was discovered by a passerby at 7:53 a.m.

Speed appears to be a factor in the crash.

UPDATE: 102-year-old missing man found

UPDATE: Kalamazoo Public Safety officers say 102-year-old Francis Morse was found safe.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- Francis Morse walked away from his home on Golden Drive around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Morse has limited mobility and uses a walker. He also has issues processing information and problem solving.

He was last seen wearing a green and white striped shirt, tan pants and was using a blue walker.

Kalamazoo man wanted for murder arrested in Las Vegas

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Kalamazoo man wanted for murder is now behind bars, thanks to police in Las Vegas.

Officers say George Mack shot Edward Bell, 26, earlier this month on Rose Street in Kalamazoo.

Bell was found Sunday, Aug. 9, with a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.

The United States Marshals Service in Las Vegas arrested Mack Monday night, Aug. 17, as he walked out of a drug store. He is currently lodged at a county jail in Nevada, waiting to be sent back to Michigan.

Dog saves owner during home invasion

TEKONSHA, Mich. (WZZM) -- A dog rescued its owner during a break in overnight in Calhoun County. The man was being assaulted by an intruder when the dog started to attack.

The sheriff's department responded to the home in the 900 block of Old US 27 around 12:40 a.m. Sunday.

The 24-year-old homeowner said the suspect came in through an unlocked window in the kitchen and attacked him.

During the assault, the suspect was bitten several times by the owner's dog, causing serious injuries.

The suspect, a 22-year-old man from Coldwater, was found at a local hospital where he was being treated for his injuries. He was later transferred to Borges Medical Center for reconstructive surgery.

The case remains under investigation and deputies tell WZZM 13 warrants will be sought at a later time.

Three shot during early morning fight in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is investigating after three people were shot during a fight. It happened around 2:45 a.m. Sunday, in the 800 block of Staples Avenue. Officers responded to the report of a large fight, where multiple gunshots were fired.

Officers found a 36 year-old man with a gunshot wound in his arm. A 24 year-old man then showed up at Bronson Hospital with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. Later, a 23 year-old man showed up with a gunshot wound to his lower leg. All three victims' injuries are considered non-life threatening. They are in stable condition at the hospital. 

Police also found a stolen 9mm handgun on the scene.
