Marathon gas station robbed overnight in Van Buren Co.


ANTWERP TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- Deputies in Van Buren County are looking for the person(s) who broke into a gas station in Antwerp Township overnight.

Sheriff Dale R. Gribler tells WZZM 13 the incident was reported shortly after 6:00 a.m. Saturday at Marathon Gas on Red Arrow Highway.

A store clerk arrived for work and found the business had been broken in to during the night.

Gunman arrested after standoff in Kalamazoo


KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Kalamazoo man is in custody after an early morning standoff with police. It began when Kalamazoo Public Safety officers were called to the scene of a home invasion in the 700 block of Portage around 3:45 a.m. Saturday.

The caller said the 25-year-old suspect broke into his apartment and stole his shotgun.

When officers arrived, the suspect was found next door. It was reported that the suspect pointed the gun at a female in his apartment. Officers say after a few minutes the suspect opened the door and threw the shotgun outside.

The Kalamazoo Metropolitan SWAT Team was called in to assist. Negotiators convinced the suspect to leave the residence after about an hour of negotiating.

The suspect was taken into custody. No one was injured.


Michigan woman arrested in Maine on kidnapping charges


ALMENA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- A 49-year-old Kalamazoo woman has been arrested in Maine for parental kidnapping.

On Aug. 3, Michigan State Police Troopers from the Paw Paw Post were called to a home in Almena Township for a missing 7-year-old child.

The father has court ordered sole-custody of his daughter. She had visited a relative on June 17 and was supposed to come home on June 20.

According to a flyer posted on the WZZM 13 Facebook page, 7-year-old Kylie was last seen with her mother, Sandra Macintosh-Charles in early July in Kalamazoo. When MSP received the complaint, the father had not seen or heard from Kylie since June 17.

On Tuesday night, Aug. 11, the relative, assumed to be Macintosh-Charles, was arrested on parental kidnapping charges after being located in Presque Isle, Maine. MSP cannot release the name of the relative until she is arraigned.

Prosecutor's office welcomes new, furry friend


PAW PAW, Mich. (WZZM) -- How cute is she? Meet Teyha! Teyha is being welcomed Tuesday into the Van Buren County Prosecutor's Office.

Teyha will be trained by Dan Cajano to help employees comfort and work with victims.

As a member of the Canine Advocacy Group, Tehya will be supporting crime victims throughout all of their court proceedings. Her cheerful personality will be an advantageous resource for the victims of Van Buren County.

Victim identified in drive-by shooting in Battle Creek


BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WZZM) -- Officials are looking for information regarding a fatal shooting early Sunday morning.

At approximately 2:50 a.m. police responded to reports of a 27-year-old man shot near Hanover Street and Walters Avenue.

The victim, Breon Terese Williams, was taken to Bronson Battle Creek where he was pronounced dead.

Williams was reportedly standing on the sidewalk when shots were fired from a passing vehicle. The vehicle then fled the scene.

Police have not released any information on suspects, nor a description of the vehicle.

Sketch released of Kalamazoo robbery suspect


KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- Deputies in Kalamazoo County are asking for information about an overnight robbery on Sunday, July 26.
It happened around 1 a.m. at the Gull Prairie Apartments. Deputies received calls about a woman screaming for help in the parking lot. She had been assaulted and robbed. She sustained minor injuries.
The suspect is a younger black man with a skinny build, close cut hair and is about 5'9". He fled in a smaller maroon or red SUV. Anyone with information is asked to call the Kalamazoo Sheriff's office or silent observer.

 


Kalamazoo police investigating two shootings


KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is investigating two, separate overnight shootings on the north side of town. As a result of the incidents, four victims were taken to the hospital for their injuries.

Around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, police were called to the 500 block of Florence Street for multiple reports of shots fired. Once on scene, officers found a large crowd of people running from the area. A short time later, three Kalamazoo women arrived at Bronson Hospital. Two were treated and released while the third victim was hospitalized and is listed in stable condition as of Sunday afternoon.
