Three dead in two Calhoun County accidents


CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich. -- Three men died Thursday in separate accidents on rural Calhoun County roads.

At 2:02 p.m. Calhoun County Sheriff Department deputies were called to a single-vehicle accident on 12 Mile Road about a half-mile south of A Drive North in Marshall Township.

Deputies said a man driving a pick-up southbound on 12 Mile Road died when the truck left the east side of the road and hit a tree.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by the Calhoun County Medical Examiner. His name was not immediately released until deputies could notify family members.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Marshall Township Fire Department.

‘Bad teeth’ bandit admits to two bank heists


KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- A 72-year-old man who pulled two guns out of a Jimmy John's sandwich box during a credit union robbery has pleaded guilty to the July heist.

Simon S. Gutierrez entered guilty pleas in U.S. District Court on Wednesday. Police arrested him July 13 at his home in Three Rivers.

At the time of his arrest, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers said Gutierrez was "no stranger to a life of robbing banks."

He admitted to robbing Consumers Credit Union on July 10. Gutierrez entered the branch on Portage Street near Banbury Road about 11 a.m. armed with two pellet guns. He pulled the weapons from the sandwich box and pointed them at clerks, fleeing with more than $6,500.

3 teens arrested after Kalamazoo crime spree


KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- Three Kalamazoo area teenagers are facing charges in connection to an all night crime spree.

Police say they have linked the teens to at least at least 45 different cases. Investigators believe it started around midnight when the three stole three CO2 powered semi-automatic BB pistols from a store on Gull Road.  

The teens allegedly then drove around the area shooting at vehicles, homes and people, pausing to steal items from cars. Police say there were no significant injuries but property damage is in the thousands of dollars.

The teens were arrested after receiving a call of a young man walking along Kings Highway with a pistol. Officers set up a perimeter around where they were spotted. The group began running from officers and were seen throwing the three guns, one of which went into the Kalamazoo River.

Man charged with Kalamazoo teen's murder


KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- A man has been charged with open murder in the case of a Kalamazoo teenager killed in a domestic violence incident earlier this week.

Officers were called to a home in the 1400 block of Lane Blvd. around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday on a report that a person had been shot. Responding officers found Temetrion Hegler, 17, on the floor of the home, dead of a gunshot wound.

Investigators accuse Hegler's step-grandfather, 53-year-old Bruce Embry, of shooting him. The two both lived in the home where the shooting happened.

Officers arrested Embry without incident and took him to the Kalamazoo County Jail. He's been arraigned on felony firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm charges, in addition to the murder count.

Man returns, is arrested at Kzoo shooting scene


OSTHEMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- A suspect who returned to the scene of a Kalamazoo motel shooting was arrested Saturday, police say.

Nasi Ben-Yaisrael, 18, was taken into custody hours after the shooting of Deshontae Dewayne Ellis, 18, said Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas. 

At least 10-20 people had rented out a room at the Red Roof Inn near Stadium Drive at U.S. 131 to attend a party. Many of the individuals were minors, Matyas said.

While some people left, Ellis was bringing people to the motel in his vehicle, Matyas said. 

Police believe Ben-Yaisrael shot and killed Ellis just after midnight in the motel's parking lot.

18-year-old killed at Kalamazoo motel


KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- An 18-year-old man is dead in an early morning homicide, police say.

The victim, who has been identified as Deshontae Dewayne Ellis of Kalamazoo, was killed at the Red Roof Inn, according to a Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office news release. 

The motel is located just off Stadium Drive at U.S. 131 in Kalamazoo.
