Man returns, is arrested at Kzoo shooting scene

OSTHEMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- A suspect who returned to the scene of a Kalamazoo motel shooting was arrested Saturday, police say.

Nasi Ben-Yaisrael, 18, was taken into custody hours after the shooting of Deshontae Dewayne Ellis, 18, said Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas.

At least 10-20 people had rented out a room at the Red Roof Inn near Stadium Drive at U.S. 131 to attend a party. Many of the individuals were minors, Matyas said.

While some people left, Ellis was bringing people to the motel in his vehicle, Matyas said.

Police believe Ben-Yaisrael shot and killed Ellis just after midnight in the motel's parking lot.

"We got the call and were able to speak to several witnesses who were at the party," said Matyas on Sunday. "Our detectives went back to the scene in the afternoon to review a few things ... and (the suspect) returned to the scene."

Plainclothes officers investigating the early morning shooting spotted Ben-Yaisrael with a group approaching the motel. Two individuals took off running upon realizing they were police, but the suspect remained, Matyas said.

Ben-Yaisrael is being held in the Kalamazoo County Jail on an open-murder charge. His arraignment is expected early this week.

The homicide investigation is ongoing.
