Go Green Youth Challenge: How to get fresh trees in your community

Applications are being accepted for the Go Green Youth Challenge tree planting grants.

Children from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to participate.  Participants are challenged to collect change individually, with their class or with a club each spring.  The change will go toward community tree plantings by the Michigan Arbor Day Alliance, as well as program outreach efforts.  The team that raises the most for the Go Green Youth Challenge will be awarded with a tree planning in their community.  They also get an invitation to the state Arbor Day celebration in April at Potter Park Zoo in Lansing.

Local governments, public educational institutions, public libraries, non-profit organizations, non-profit organizations, neighborhood associations, churches and tribal governments can also apply for a Go Green youth Challenge tree planting grant by visiting this websit

Kalamazoo in Bloom is looking for volunteer gardeners

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—The non-profit organization behind the flowers you see in Bronson Park and outside the Portage District Library needs your help.

Kalamazoo in Bloom is looking for volunteers to take part in community planting days, which are May 17 in Portage and May 23 in downtown Kalamazoo. Last year, more than 300 people took part.

In honor of Portage’s silver anniversary, Kalamazoo in Bloom is designing a “50” made out of flowers at the corner of South Westnedge and Old Westnedge.

Volunteer registration for the community planting in Portage will take place May 17, at 8 a.m. on Library Lane.  Parking is available at the Portage District Library.

DNR looking for Stewardship Volunteers

DNR looking for Stewardship Volunteers

Volunteering for the Department of Natural Resources is a great way to get outdoors and enjoy the State Parks, get exercise, and breathe some fresh air while still having fun and enjoying the magnificent scenery that Michigan is known for.

Volunteers are needed from Berrien County north to Muskegon County. The State calls this a volunteer stewardship program throughout the month of May. Come prepared with appropriate clothing for outdoor work, layered, if possible, for a good days' work. Gloves and drinking water are a must.

Youth groups, scouts, service clubs and classes are needed to locate and remove the invasive weed, known as Garlic Mustard. This plant is a threat to wildflowers like trillium and bloodroot along with others.

Free program helps home and business owners deal with mercury
