Kalamazoo Public Safety requests help in search for murder suspect

Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers want to know if you have seen Samuel Steel, 43.

Steel is facing a six count warrant in connection with the murder of Milo Conklin on April 24, 2011.  The warrants are for: Open Murder, Assault with Intent to Murder, Felon in Possession of a Firearm and two counts of Felony Firearm.

Steel should be considered armed and dangerous.

Kalamazoo, MIOn February 2, 2012, officers from the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team, with the assistance of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety’s SWAT team, simultaneously executed 3 search warrants in the City of Kalamazoo.

One of the warrants was executed at a residence in the 2200 Block of South Burdick Street.  Officers located and seized a quantity of crack and powder cocaine at that location. 

The second warrant was executed at a business in the 1000 Block of West North Street.  Officers located and seized a quantity of crack cocaine at that location.

The third warrant was executed at a residence in the 600 Block of Jefferson Place.  As officers entered the basement of this residence, they encountered an aggressive, unlicensed pit-bull in the stairwell.  One officer fired at the dog in self defense.  The

Vehicle Slide-Off Leads To Breaking and Entering Arrest

On January 29, 2012 at approximately 0943 hrs, officers from the Kalamazoo Township Police Dept. responded to the 2100 block of Oak Openings on a report of a vehicle that had slid off the roadway and had become stuck in the ditch.  A witness reported that after the slide-off, the driver fled from the vehicle.  Kalamazoo Public Safety officers also responded to assist.

Township officers followed the tracks in the snow that led up to a house in the 700 block of Fennimore.  When officers knocked on the front door, a male subject ran out the back door and toward awaiting officers.  The suspect resisted arrest and was taken into custody after a brief struggle.

Kalamazoo, MI:  On January 8, 2012 at approximately 6:10 p.m. Kalamazoo Public Safety dispatch received a call reporting a subject down in the street with a gun shot wound to the chest in the 800 block of N. Rose.  The first officers on scene located, 21 year old Kalamazoo resident, Romney Hunter, unconscious in the street.  They rendered aid to him until Life Ambulance arrived and transported him to Bronson Hospital.  Sadly Mr. Hunter was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Kalamazoo Public Safety continues to extend their condolences to Mr. Hunter’s family and friends.

A second victim approached officers while they were rendering aid to the first.  He was identified as 31 year old Kalamazoo resident, Troy Whitfield, who reported he had been shot in the leg during the incident.  Mr. Whitfield was also taken to Bronson with non life threatening wounds to his leg.  He is expected to make a full recovery.

On January 18, 2012, officers from the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team were investigating drug related tips in the 300 block of West Dutton when they observed a man behaving suspiciously.  They contacted the man and upon further investigation, the officers learned that the man had a loaded 9 mm semiautomatic handgun on his person and that he was also in possession of suspected methamphetamine.  The gun was determined to have been reported as stolen.

The thirty four year old Kalamazoo man was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a stolen firearm, and for carrying a concealed weapon.  He was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.

Two arrested during meth bust

Officers from the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team, acting on a citizen’s tips of reports of methamphetamine trafficking, contacted a 44 year old female Kalamazoo resident after she was seen leaving a residence in the 100 block of W. Dutton. The female suspect was found to be in possession of methamphetamine, packaged for sale, pseudoephedrine, and key components for methamphetamine manufacturing. This female was arrested on two outstanding felony warrants, one of which was for a previous meth lab investigation, and on two new charges of Manufacturing Methamphetamine and Possession With Intent to Deliver Methamphetamine.
