South Side Crack Ring Bust

On 5-10-2012, in response to citizen’s tips and complaints, officers from the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team conducted an operation on the south side of Kalamazoo where three search warrants were executed. Two of the warrants were served in the 1400 block of Washington Street and the other was served in the 900 block of Jackson Street. KVET investigated the initial tips and during the course of the investigation, identified three residences involved in a crack distribution ring. The two locations in the 1400 of Washington were identified as crack distribution houses and the residence on Jackson Street was found to be the source or the supply of the illicit drug enterprise.

On 5-08-2012, officers from the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team conducted an operation on the East side of Kalamazoo targeting street level drug dealers. During this operation, KVET officers arrested a 24 year-old Kalamazoo man after he was observed selling crack cocaine. Officers arrested this individual near the intersection of Sherwood Avenue and Fairbanks Street. A quantity of crack cocaine was seized during the incident. A subsequent search was conducted at a residence in the 1300 block of Sherwood Avenue. During this search, an additional amount of crack cocaine and an electronic scale were located. The crack cocaine seized had an estimated street value of $600.

The 24 year-old Kalamazoo resident was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on charges for Delivery of Crack Cocaine and Possession With Intent To Deliver Crack Cocaine.

Increase in Commercial Air Conditioner Thefts

Kalamazoo Public Safety has been investigating an increase in the theft of commercial air conditioner units stolen from area office buildings.  Officers have investigated six incidents where air conditioning units have been removed from outside of local office buildings in the last month.  It appears the thieves are targeting the copper located within these air conditioners.

All six of these incidents have occurred just south of downtown Kalamazoo, three in the 900 block of John St., one in the 1700 block of S. Park St., one in the 900 block of Gibson St. and one in the 600 block of S. Rose St. 

Vehicle Occupants Hurt in Traffic Crash

On Saturday, April 21, 2012, at approximately 4:00a.m., KDPS officers responded to a traffic crash at W. Main/Monroe.

Upon arrival, officers found one car turned upside down on its roof, which was crushed.  It appeared that the vehicle ran into a pole, causing it to land in the position it was found. Extrication was utilized to remove the occupants from the vehicle and they were both transported to Bronson Hospital via LIFE Ambulance.  A 22-year-old female Kalamazoo resident is still at the hospital in critical condition.  A 23-year-old male Kalamazoo resident was treated and released.

The investigation is still ongoing and is being handled by the Criminal Investigations Division.  Details on other specifics of this incident not mentioned here are not available at this time. 

Kalamazoo mortgage broker sentenced to 33 months in prison for wire fraud

Mark Alan Maurer, 35, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, was sentenced to 33 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, announced U.S. Attorney Donald A. Davis. The sentence was imposed as the result of a November 7, 2011 guilty plea to wire fraud. Maurer obtained loans under false pretenses, and pledged mortgages he did not own as security for other loans he never repaid. In addition to the prison sentence, U.S. District Court Judge Janet T. Neff also ordered Maurer to pay $120,000 in restitution.

Kalamazoo Man Hospitalized After Shooting

Public Safety Officers were sent to a report of shots fired in the 1100 block of Summit St. at 03:10am this morning.  Officers located a 20yr. old Kalamazoo man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.  The victim is presently in stable condition at Bronson Hospital.

Detectives have made an arrest in this shooting.  He is a 25 year old Kalamazoo resident, he is currently lodged in the Kalamazoo County Jail on a charge of Assault with Intent to Murder.

Drug Trafficker off to Federal Prison

Drug Trafficker off to Federal Prison

As a result of an investigation conducted by the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team (KVET), and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), a Kalamazoo area resident was sentenced to federal prison for trafficking crack cocaine in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  The below sentence was handed down by the Honorable Chief Judge Paul Maloney in the U.S. Federal Court in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

On September 9, 2011, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to 1509 Alamo Hills apartment 1, because Marcus RAND had been shot in the hand.  During the investigation, KDPS discovered that RAND had been in possession of over 85 grams of crack cocaine and over 557 grams of marijuana for distribution, as well as over $5,000 in US currency.  The details of the case were presented to AUSA Russel Kavalhuna and he agreed to adopt the case to issue federal charges.
