Tips lead to multiple arrests and drug seizures in the 800 block of S. Rose

On 9-17-12 officers from the C.O.P.S division investigated complaints regarding drug activity in the 800 block of S. Rose.  Officers approached the area of 800 S. Rose after observing several people in the front of the residence that had been described as being involved in drug transactions.  

Upon attempting contact, two of the subjects attempted to flee from officers on foot, with one discarding a bag containing marijuana and crack cocaine packaged for sale.  A second subject who attempted to flee on foot was located and officers became suspicious he was providing an alias when he could not correctly spell the name he was using.  

When his true identity was determined he was found to have 4 outstanding warrants for his arrest.  Officers then contacted the resident of the apartment involved with the investigation and also arrested her on an outstanding warrant.

On Saturday, September 8th, 2012, at approximately 7:45 p.m., officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department and Western Michigan University Police Department responded to an accident in front of Waldo’s Stadium involving a SUV and a pedestrian. Upon arrival, officers found a 24 year-old male lying in the road unconscious with significant injuries to the head. Based on the preliminary investigation, the pedestrian ran out into the roadway in front of a Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling eastbound on Stadium Drive. The pedestrian was transported to Bronson Hospital and is listed in critical condition.

On September 2, 2012 at approximately 0130 hrs, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers were in the 2800 block of West Michigan Ave. addressing a large crowd of approximately 200 people who had gathered in the area.  Sgt. Scott Smith observed a person in the crowd raise what appeared to be a handgun and fire three shots into the air.  The crowd of people began scattering in different directions and Sgt. Smith and PSO Wiedbrauk chased the suspect as he ran from the area.
 
The suspect was apprehended after a brief foot pursuit.  During the foot pursuit, the suspect threw the gun under a parked car.  The gun, a .38 caliber 5-shot revolver that had been reported as stolen out of Parchment, was quickly recovered by officers.

On Sunday, April 24, 2011, at approximately 9:10pm., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 600 block of Mabel St.  Responding officers discovered Milo Conklin, a 35-year old Kalamazoo resident, had been shot.  Mr. Conklin died as a result of the injuries.  A second victim, a 51 year old Kalamazoo man, was also discovered at the scene to have minor injuries from a gun shot. 

Sam Steel has been on the run since December 2011, when the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office issued a six count warrant against him for the murder of Milo Conklin. Yesterday morning, Sam Steel was arrested by an FBI Task Force just north of Atlanta, Georgia as a result of a joint Kalamazoo Public Safety and FBI investigation.

 On Monday, July 30th, 2012, at 11:06 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to a report of a vehicle that had crashed into a tree at the intersection of S. Burdick and Kilgore Rd. Upon arrival, Public Safety officers found that all four occupants of the crashed vehicle had fled the scene on foot. Officers began searching the area locating all the occupants a short distance away. Two passengers sustained injures from the crash, with one of the injuries being severe. Both passengers were transported to Bronson hospital and are listed in stable condition.

On Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers Ryan Perez and Steven Heyduck stopped a car in the 1100 block of Douglas Ave.  The car was stopped because the driver, a 21 year old Kalamazoo resident had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant.  A passenger in the vehicle jumped out of the car, but was quickly detained. 

The passenger, an 18 year old Kalamazoo resident was arrested after several attempts at giving a bad name.  He soon came clean and was found to have a multiple count felony warrant for assault with intent to commit murder.  He was searched and charged with carrying a concealed weapon after a knife was located in his pocket.  An additional passenger, a 21 year old Kalamazoo resident, was cited for open intoxicants in the car, but then released.

On 07/02/2012, at approximately 2:50 A. M. Officers from the Portage Department of Public Safety responded to a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred at 7025 Sprinkle Rd. the Citgo Gas station.  The clerk reported that two white male subjects came into the store, both brandishing handguns, and then ordered him to remove money from the register.  Before leaving the store, the suspects told the clerk to lie down on the floor.  The suspects then left the store in an unknown direction.
