Subject Arrested After Fleeing in a Stolen Vehicle

On March 18, 2012 at 7:47 p.m., Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Officers Marcel Behnen and Jon Schippers spotted a vehicle that had been reported stolen from a downtown car dealership earlier in the day.  The officers got behind the vehicle in the 1900 block of Portage Road and attempted to stop it but the vehicle fled southbound on Portage Road.  The officers pursued the vehicle to the area of Oakland Drive and Milham Drive where officers from the Portage Department of Public Safety took over the pursuit.  The driver of the stolen vehicle abandoned the vehicle in the parking lot of the Woodland Elementary School and was taken into custody in a wooded area a short distance away. 

The suspect, a 53 year old Portage resident, was arrested for stealing the vehicle as well as Fleeing and Eluding, Possession of Cocaine, and Driving on a Suspended License.  He is currently lodged in the Kalamazoo County Jail.
