Three juveniles arrested for purse theft

From the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety - On December 28, 2011, at approximately 2350 hrs, an employee at Cosmo’s Cucina, located at 804 W. Vine Street called public safety to report that her purse had been stolen.  She said that three juveniles entered the restaurant near closing time.  One of them distracted her while another took the purse.  She did not notice the purse was missing until ten to fifteen minutes after they had left.

Responding officers set up a perimeter around the area and a K-9 track was attempted.  Officers located three juveniles who matched the clothing description given by the victim in the 700 block of Academy Street.  They were detained and were all found to be in violation of the city’s curfew ordinance.  An ATM card with the victim’s name on it was found in one of the juvenile’s pockets during a search incident to the arrest along with cash and other items that were taken from the purse.  The other two juveniles also had cash in their possession which they admitted had been taken from the victim’s purse.

The purse and its remaining contents were found discarded in a back yard in the 800 block of W. Vine.  All of the stolen property was returned to the owner.

The three juvenile suspects ages 13, 15, and 16 were all Kalamazoo City residents.  They were lodged at the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home on a variety of charges including Larceny in a Building, Receiving and Concealing Stolen Property, and violating the city’s curfew ordinance.
