Meth lab likely sparked fire at Portage home

PORTAGE, Mich.—Public safety officers believe a methamphetamine lab may have sparked the fire that forced nearly a dozen people from a Portage home.

On June 19, police and firefighters were called to the 5500 block of Deerfield around 3:15 a.m. on reports of a fire.  When they arrived, smoke was spilling out of the home.  Investigators believe the fire started in a bedroom where someone may have been manufacturing meth.

Police confiscated several meth-making tools from the home.  So far no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call the Portage Department of Public Safety at (269) 329-4567 or Silent Observer at 343-2100.
