Thanks to more than 2,000 people’s overflowing love for Kalamazoo’s craft beer scene, Kalamazoo is now in the running to be crowned the next “Beer City USA.”

Kalamazoo swept the April 2013 nomination poll for the title of Beer City USA, garnering 2,008 (61 percent) of the nomination votes. However, the journey isn’t over yet.

Now, the community’s support in needed to help pull off the win.

From 2 p.m. May 6 through 11:59 p.m. May 10, Kalamazoo will face off against nearly two-dozen other beer-haven contenders in an online poll on the National Beer Examiner’s website. To vote, visit www.VoteKalamazoo.com.

New Kalamazoo brewery will focus on local food

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Battle Creek Enquirer)-- Arcadia Brewing Company released an update on the progress of construction for the Kalamazoo branch, which is scheduled to open in December.

Arcadia West, at 701 E. Michigan Ave. in Kalamazoo, will focus its menu on locally sourced food. They’ll serve the barbeque and smoked meats the brewery is known for, as well as experimenting with Middle Eastern and South American cuisine.

Food will be ordered at a counter, and beer specialists will be on hand to serve beverages and make recommendations. There will be indoor seating and an outdoor beer garden.

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs is giving more than $12,000 in grants to organizations and projects in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo.

The New Leaders Arts Council of Michigan, an advisory council for the MCACA, approved $57,380 in grants to support young leaders.  In Grand Rapids, ArtPrize will get $2,380.

Benefit pairs noodles with fight against kidney disease

Now’s your chance to get a meal while helping people with kidney disease.

On Thursday, April 11, Noodles & Company will donate 25% of sales at its Michigan restaurants to the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan.  To guarantee the donation, guests must mention the foundation or present a flyer when ordering.   The benefit runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at all Michigan locations, including restaurants at  5070 28th St. SE in Cascade Township, 2289 East Beltline in Grand Rapids Township, and 5363 W. Main St. in Kalamazoo.

Guests can also donate $1 to be entered into the NKFM raffle.  The grand prize winner will take home a Kindle Fire e-reader; other prizes include free noodles for a year or a dinner for four.  All proceeds from the raffle will go to the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan.

This is the fourth year for the benefit.
