International best-selling author visits Kalamazoo November 7

KALAMAZOO, Mich.--- An author whose best-selling books may soon become a Disney movie is coming to Kalamazoo.

New York Times and international best-selling author Ally Condie will read and sign copies of her books at Kalamazoo Public Library’s central location Thursday, November 7.   The event begins at 6:30 p.m.

Condie is author of the Matched Trilogy, which includes “Matched,” “Crossed” and “Reached.”   The set of young adult books have earned a variety of honors, including the top spot on the Winter Kids’ Indie Next List.  All three books are available in more than 30 languages and Disney has purchased film rights to the series.

Condie is a former English teacher who lives with her husband and four children outside of Salt Lake City, Utah.  She loves reading, writing, running and listening to her husband play guitar.

Dentist saves smiles while treating troops during candy buyback

PORTAGE, Mich.—A Portage dentist plans to do something sweet with the candy she buys back from trick-or-treaters.

Dr. Susan M. Dennis is teaming up with Operation Gratitude to donate treats to troops deployed overseas.  All children who donate their candy to the program will be eligible to win an iPod touch from Dr. Dennis.

“We want Michigan kids to have healthy teeth and beautiful smiles,” Dr. Dennis said. “Our team is encouraging children to treat our troops with a portion of their Halloween candy.”

This is the third year for Dr. Dennis’ Halloween Candy Buyback, which will take place November 4, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at her office at 8150 Moorsbridge Rd., Suite A.  Dr.

Habitat ReStore Celebrates its 8th Birthday in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich.  – It’s been eight years since the Habitat for Humanity ReStore opened at 1810 Lake Street, Kalamazoo. In those eight years, thousands of supporters have donated appliances, furniture, construction materials and components, tools, fixtures, and more to the Habitat ReStore. Habitat ReStore customers have purchased very affordable items to remodel, repair, decorate, and furnish their homes. The profit from those sales has helped Habitat for Humanity build home s in the community. Another benefit: this “recycling” of donated items to new users has diverted 3 million pounds of waste from local landfills.

KENTWOOD, Mich.—Time is running out to enter the ultimate wedding for Smashburger lovers.

Couples have until 11:59 p.m. Friday, October 25 to enter the 11/12/13 Smashburger Wedding contest.  To enter, create a Vine, YouTube or Instagram video with the hashtag #SmashWedding, then post it on Smashburger’s Facebook and Twitter pages with the hashtag included.

All participants will be entered to win a flight to Las Vegas for a wedding officiated by “Elvis” at Smashburger.  The “wedding cake” will be completely constructed out of Smashburgers, with a lunch reception of Smashburger food.  The wedding flowers will also include burgers and fries.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Meijer) – Meijer, the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based supercenter chain, announced today that it is partnering with Priority Health, Michigan's leading health plan, to raise awareness and help customers obtain information regarding their options as open enrollment for health insurance begins under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
