2 people killed en route to hospital for birth


COMSTOCK TWP. Mich. (WZZM) -- Two people traveling to the hospital to visit for a family birth were killed in a crash Saturday.

Emil Skokan III, 34, and Peggy Nichols, 53, were traveling northbound on South 26th Street at Cork when Skokan lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree, according to a Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office news release. The crash happened just before 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12.

The two were pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation found they were en route to the hospital for the birth of a family member.


Raw sewage comes up from opening in manhole


KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) -- Officials say solidifying kitchen grease blocked a sewer line in Kalamazoo, causing about 400 gallons of raw sewage to come up through an opening in a manhole.
    
Sue Foune, managing director of the City of Kalamazoo Public Services, tells the Kalamazoo Gazette that the problem was reported Saturday night.
    
Foune says crews removed the blockage that night and vacuumed up sewage from the pavement. State environmental officials and local health officials have been notified.


3 arrested for drugs, gun found in car


KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM)-- The Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers stopped a 1999 Ford Taurus on Woodbury Avenue around 2:45 a.m. Saturday for a traffic violation.

The officers found marijuana inside the car, which prompted two passengers to run, police said. The back seat passenger was caught on Florence Street.

Police found cocaine on the suspect. The front seat passenger was tracked down by a police K-9 unit, hiding behind a home on Florence Street.

Police also found a loaded .40 caliber handgun in the front passenger seat.

One of the 20 year-old suspects faces charges for resisting arrest and possession of cocaine. The other 20-year-old passenger faces charges for resisting arrest, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of marijuana.

The driver stayed on the scene. They face charges for driving on a suspended license and possessing marijuana.

Kzoo police sergeant dies after breast cancer fight


KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- Sergeant Lisa Moore Zuk, a 14 and a half year veteran of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, died Monday after a battle with breast cancer.

The department described her as having an "infectious attitude and fighting spirit ... an everlasting gift to those that worked with and around her," according to a news release. 

Zuk served as an officer, K-9 handler, field training officer, recruiter and a sergeant in Kalamazoo's Edison Neighborhood. 

Funeral arrangements are handled by Langeland Family Funeral Homes - Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th St., in Kalamazoo. Hours for visitation are slated from 1-4 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6. Visitation is open to the public.

The funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, and is open to family, friends and law enforcement. It will take place at the Valley Family Church on Vincent Avenue.


Local farm sending Christmas trees to Army base


GOBLES, Mich. (WZZM) -- A West Michigan farm is shipping off hundreds of Christmas trees to a U.S. military base for service members and their families.

The Wahmhoff Farms near Gobles is one of the growers taking part in Trees for Troops. The farm and its customers donate the trees to military bases in the United States and overseas.

Man, 29, hit in arm in apparent drive-by shooting


BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WZZM) -- A man was shot in the arm during what is believed to be a drive-by shooting Sunday afternoon.

The victim, identified only as a 29-year-old male, was at the intersection of Orchard Avenue and St. Joseph Lane when a black SUV pulled up next to him, according to a Battle Creek Police Department news release. Someone inside it then fired several rounds and took off.

The shooting happened around 1:11 p.m. Sunday.

Police learned of the shooting at Battle Creek Bronson Hospital, where the victim was taken by family members for treatment.

His injury is described as non life threatening.

Man killed in Kalamazoo County crash on I-94


KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM) -- A 49-year-old man is dead after an accident on I-94 late Thursday night.

It happened just before 10:30 near mile marker 86. Deputies say the man was in front of his own car, which was in the outside westbound lane of the freeway.

Another vehicle hit the man's car, which caused it to hit the man, killing him. Comstock and Galesburg crews responded to the crash. They attempted to save the man's life but were unsuccessful.
