Man charged with Kalamazoo teen's murder

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- A man has been charged with open murder in the case of a Kalamazoo teenager killed in a domestic violence incident earlier this week.

Officers were called to a home in the 1400 block of Lane Blvd. around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday on a report that a person had been shot. Responding officers found Temetrion Hegler, 17, on the floor of the home, dead of a gunshot wound.

Investigators accuse Hegler's step-grandfather, 53-year-old Bruce Embry, of shooting him. The two both lived in the home where the shooting happened.

Officers arrested Embry without incident and took him to the Kalamazoo County Jail. He's been arraigned on felony firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm charges, in addition to the murder count.

Man returns, is arrested at Kzoo shooting scene

OSTHEMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- A suspect who returned to the scene of a Kalamazoo motel shooting was arrested Saturday, police say.

Nasi Ben-Yaisrael, 18, was taken into custody hours after the shooting of Deshontae Dewayne Ellis, 18, said Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas. 

At least 10-20 people had rented out a room at the Red Roof Inn near Stadium Drive at U.S. 131 to attend a party. Many of the individuals were minors, Matyas said.

While some people left, Ellis was bringing people to the motel in his vehicle, Matyas said. 

Police believe Ben-Yaisrael shot and killed Ellis just after midnight in the motel's parking lot.

18-year-old killed at Kalamazoo motel

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- An 18-year-old man is dead in an early morning homicide, police say.

The victim, who has been identified as Deshontae Dewayne Ellis of Kalamazoo, was killed at the Red Roof Inn, according to a Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office news release. 

The motel is located just off Stadium Drive at U.S. 131 in Kalamazoo.

Additional details are not immediately available.

Woman hurt in shooting in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- A 22 year old woman is recovering after being shot in the arm while riding in a car in Kalamazoo.

It happened at 3:09 a.m. Saturday in the 900 block of Nola Street. Officers say they were flagged down by a woman who told Police an unknown suspect had just fired multiple gunshots into her car while she was driving.

The front seat passenger sustained non-life threatening injuries to her right arm and was transported to Bronson Hospital for treatment. The driver and rear seat passenger were not injured. The vehicle sustained damage, including multiple bullet holes and broken windows. There are no suspects at this time. Public Safety officers are looking into what events led up to the shooting.

17-year-old hit, killed on Calhoun County highway

ALBION, Mich. -- A teenager who had run away from Starr Commonwealth died Friday when he was struck by a van on I-94.

Calhoun County Sheriff Department Sgt. Brent Lincoln said  the 17-year-old from Flint had been missing from the nearby campus about 20 minutes before the accident.

The crash in the eastbound lanes of I-94 at the 119-mile marker or 26-Mile Road in Sheridan Township was reported at 5:52 a.m.

The teenager, whose name was not released early Friday, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police looking for Kalamazoo shooting suspect

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- A 20-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot multiple times.

The victim suffered several gunshot wounds around 2 p.m. Friday in the 2700 block of Westbrook Avenue, according to a Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety news release. Police say he called police to report his injuries.

The man, whose name has not been released, was shot by an unknown suspect inside his apartment and was taken to Bronson Hospital for surgery.

The suspect still is at large, police say. They were able to compose a composite sketch of the suspect.

He is described as an African American man with light complexion. He is about 5'9" tall and 160lbs. He is described as being approximately 20-28 years old, wearing a white thermal long sleeve shirt, black jeans and a gray stocking cap. He also has a mustache and goatee.

Store robbed; manager pistol whipped

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- The Kalamazoo Public Safety department reports the Family Dollar store at 507 N. Park was robbed at 8:55 p.m. Christmas Eve.

Officers say the suspect followed the store manager into the office and robbed him at gunpoint. No shots were fired, but the manager was struck in the head several times with the gun.

The manager was not seriously injured and did not require medical attention.

The suspect is a black male in his 30's approximately 6 feet tall and around 230 pounds wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, dark jeans and white shoes.
