GOP presidential contender Cruz campaigns in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) campaigned in West Michigan today and had some harsh words for the Obama administration's handling of foreign affairs.

Sen. Cruz says it's "nothing short of crazy" for America to allow 10,000 Syrian refugees into the country. The Republican candidate for president says most of the refugees are young men, and he thinks some of those young men are ISIS terrorists.

Cruz was in Kalamazoo today in front of a crowd that was fewer than 1,000 people. He says as president, he would have the Department of Justice investigate Planned Parenthood. He also says he would end what he calls "religious persecution" and says he would not honor the recent nuclear agreement with Iran.

Police: Woman stabs her dad to stop attack

PORTAGE, Mich. (WZZM) -- Police are investigating an overnight incident where a woman says she was forced to stab her own father.

It happened around ten o'clock last night in the parking lot of a gas station at Westnedge Avenue and Romence Road Parkway.

Investigators say the 51-year-old Detroit man suffered a mental disorder while traveling to Chicago with his 20-year-old daughter and her friend. The trio turned off I-94 and stopped at the station.

There was an argument, and police say the dad began choking his daughter's friend. The daughter told officers she stabbed her father in the back of his thigh with a small knife to stop his attack.

The father is undergoing a mental evaluation.
