Woman rescued from balcony in Kalamazoo fire

KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- Fire crews are looking into an apartment fire near Kalamazoo.

Police say a large fire broke out just before 10:30 Saturday night at Country Meadows Apartments on Sunnyside Drive, south of Gull Road. That's east of Kalamazoo.
Officials tell us no one was seriously hurt but one woman did have to be rescued from her balcony.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Police: Reported robbery on WMU campus

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- Western Michigan University officials are asking the campus community to use caution following a reported robbery early Saturday.

The robbery, as witnessed by another person, occurred around 3 a.m. Saturday near the Burnhams residence hall, according to a university news release. Police say two teenage males demanded a wallet from the visiting victim. 

A weapon was reportedly spotted on the suspects. 

People are asked to call campus police at 269-387-5555 if they witness any suspicious activity.

Flags ordered at half-staff for Master Sgt. Greg Kuhse

LANSING, Mich. (WZZM) -- Governor Rick Snyder is ordering U.S. and Michigan flags to fly at half-staff on Monday, to honor a West Michigan airman killed in Afghanistan.

U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant Gregory Kuhse, of Kalamazoo, died in a British helicopter crash earlier this month.

The 38-year-old was a 1995 graduate of Comstock High School.

The Governor says "Kuhse died honorably, defending his country and our state."

His funeral is Saturday.

Fire damaged office building in Oshtemo Township

OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) - Firefighters from multiple departments fought a fire at an office building Tuesday afternoon in Oshtemo Township.

The fire burned the upper level of the building in the 5900 block of West Main, near Club View Drive and Lodge Lane. The building houses a Farmers Insurance office as well as other offices.

WZZM 13 News does not have any information right now about any injuries.

Several neighboring fire departments were called in to assist the Oshtemo Township Fire Department.

3 dead after one-car crash in Van Buren Co.

PORTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- Three people are dead after a one-car crash in Van Buren County.

The driver, Brandon Mark Vanwalbeck, 21, and his passengers, Andrew Michael Rambo, 15, and Hunter Jewel LaRose, 16, were all from Vicksburg.

Police say the crash happened at 94th Avenue and 28½ Street. The 1999 Ford Taurus had been westbound on 94th when it went off the road at a curve, crashing into a tree. It then rolled several times.

Investigators said the crash was reported shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday, but the engine wasn't warm anymore at that point, so they're not sure when precisely it happened.

The sheriff department says the Vicksburg Public Schools district will make grief counselors available to students on Friday.

The accident remains under investigation.

Sexual assault leads to two arrests on multiple charges

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- Two men are behind bars after robbing and sexually assaulting a 22-year-old woman in Oshtemo Township.

Kalamazoo County deputies were called to the Canterbury House Apartments on Sunday around 4 a.m.

After arriving, they learned the victim let Jamaal Gevon Conger, 20, into her home. They knew each other through mutual friends. Once inside, the woman went into her bedroom and closed the door. A short time later, the door was opened and Conger and Tyrell Lamar Sheppard, 22, walked inside.

The victim told authorities she was forced at gunpoint by the men to stay in her room while her belongings were stolen from the apartment. After the theft, she was forced by Sheppard to her vehicle, driven from the area and sexually assaulted.

Portage man hit while crossing the street

Update, 1 p.m.: Police have identified the man as Portage resident Bradley Westfall. His condition is unknown, but he remains hospitalized.

PORTAGE, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Portage is man is hospitalized after being hit by a car while crossing the street Tuesday night.

Portage police say it happened around 8:40 p.m. at the intersection of Shaver Road and South Westnedge Avenue. The 44-year-old man was crossing South Westnedge when he was hit by a Ford car, driven by a 59-year-old woman from Schoolcraft.

The man was taken to Bronson Hospital. No word yet on his condition.
